WorkSafeBC to investigate following fatal workplace accident

On Behalf of | Mar 15, 2016 | Workplace Accidents |

The unexpected death of loved one is always difficult to face. This is particularly true when the person who dies is young and has most of his or her life ahead of them. Though few people likely think about it when they set off for work in the morning, in some cases it is possible a fatal accident could occur there.

Sadly a 31-year-old man from Vancouver recently died while working. The workplace accident occurred as the man was working on digging a ditch for a sewer. Something happened that caused the ditch to cave in on him.

As is the case in situations such as these, WorkSafeBC will commence an investigation into the incident. It is possible that if non-compliance with workers’ compensation and occupational health and safety legislation is uncovered, the employer could face fines.

Because a workplace accident can result in serious repercussions for an employer, it is a good idea for a business to take steps to make sure its best interest are being protected. This is true regardless of whether it is an investigation or hearing that is taking place.

A lawyer who has knowledge of workers’ compensation and occupational health and safety law can be of particular assistance in matters of this nature. They may also help before an accident even occurs by helping employers to be proactive in ways that might prevent a fatal workplace accident from occurring in the first place, ultimately saving a life as well as minimizing potential fallout for an employer.
