Young man dies in workplace accident at landfill site

Stories of young workers killed or injured while on the job are becoming increasingly common. One recent case involves a young man who lost his life in a workplace accident in Chilliwack, B.C.

The accident happened on February 21st, just before 1:00 p.m. at a landfill site in Chilliwack. The 21-year-old man, an employee of an outside company, was working on a construction project at the site. The project involved working on a 40-foot high “tilt-up” structure which would later be used as a transfer station. The employee was working from this height when he fell to his death.

Co-workers reacted quickly to the accident, but found the employee without a pulse. Social media posts from a co-worker and the landfill confirmed that the man had passed away. Local RCMP officers took charge of the location, and WorkSafeBC was on site to investigate what went wrong.

Should the cause of this workplace accident turn out to be unsafe conditions or procedures, there may be consequences for the construction company, and possibly the landfill. When an employer comes under scrutiny for possible health and safety violations in British Columbia, it could be the beginning of a complicated process. A dedicated and experienced lawyer can work with an individual employer or larger company to provide legal advice and representation through workplace accident investigations.
